Key information

Bacán is a Latin American restaurant and mezcaleria located in the backstreets of San Polo, Venice. It offers a fresh, young, elegant, and intimate dining experience with a 'picoso' (spicy) take on Venetian cuisine. The restaurant features an open kitchen, allowing for a natural connection between guests and the culinary process. It is considered a hidden gem, offering both tasting menus and à la carte options.

Customer perception

Customer feedback for Bacán is largely positive, with many praising the creative, delicious, and unique Latin American flavors. Specific dishes like the pastor tacos, bone marrow tostada, and picanha are frequently highlighted as exceptional. The cocktails are also highly rated. Service is often described as excellent and attentive. However, some negative feedback includes issues with steak quality, small portion sizes, and a perceived lack of welcoming service in certain instances. Despite some criticisms, many reviewers see great potential for the restaurant, even mentioning Michelin star potential.

I don’t say this lightly: some of the best tacos I’ve had in Europe — and yes, in Venice. The sauces alone are worth the visit. Pure umami harmony. And the kitchen does much more than tacos. Insider tip: reserve a table.

I’m not one to leave reviews usually. But this was such a nice experience, I hope to share it with others. We needed a break from Italian food. We passed by Bacan, which has an amazing atmosphere and had to come inside. This was my favorite meal of our trip in Italy. The food was amazing, and outstanding service. The whole culinary and service experience here is outstanding, especially for its modest price point. This was quality food, and trendy atmosphere. 10/10 recommend for a date night or smaller group dinner. Very unique cocktails too.

We walked by this restaurant earlier that had a really yummy sounding menu so we came back for dinner We had tequila drinks from the menu and we loved them so much. Mine had something like the ground up essence of tortilla chips with my salt for my margarita. It was amazing. We shared the tostada bone marrow canoe topped with steak tartar and what they did with it was phenomenal. The FLAVORS! Then we split the pastor tacos and it was pork belly, pineapple, chipotle and pico de gallo and Joey declared it the best taco he’s ever had! Lastly we split the Asado which is Picanha, corn, chimichurri, oxtail and yuca sono and short ribs crochette. Bistecca alla Fiorentina has nothing on this Picanha. The flavors and textures all worked together and made this the best meal we have eaten in 10 cities, hands down. Our waiter Nicola was so kind and gave great recommendations.

I came by on our last day because we were tired of Italian food and it was such a pleasant surprise. Everything was mind blowing except for the main course which was a very bad cut of steak. The server didn’t ask us how we would like the steak and gave us 2 very small steaks raw. This had the most fat and ligaments. It was horrible to eat. Terrible service and not very accommodating. We had a concert at 8:30pm and wanted to upgrade to the 8 course meal but the restaurant didn’t even try to offer anything. Portions are very small too, 90% sauce 10% actual food. To be fair this is the most unique flavors profiles we have had in a while. The 5 course meal would have been a 10/10 if they didn’t mess up the steak so badly. I have seen some of their instagram post and they seem to prepare it differently so not sure why they decided to ruin our meal with this cut of steak. There were no other customers other than us and another table and yet they offered to sit us either right next to them or the bar area. The entire hour and half of our dining there were no customers coming in and no reservations. The restaurant was empty and they couldn’t offer us better seats. I also felt that they weren’t as welcoming not sure if because we were Asians or they just are like that. I even share that I grew up in a Latin country and try to do some small talk but the waiter wouldn’t budge. Too unfortunate because this restaurant has so much potential for a Michelin star. We probably also had one of the best desserts in a long while here. Please take this criticism and do better. If you can’t make a right steak then don’t even bother adding it to the menu. Coming from NYC and having try few Michelin star restaurants there, Japan and Paris. I left disappointed.

Absolutely loved this place! Great vibes, impeccable food, service, plating. Was a nice change of pace from the traditional Italian fare. Can’t wait to return on my next trip!
