Imagine everything you love about Japanese dining: elegance, subtlety, excellent service, a relaxed atmosphere that invites conversation and attention to the food.
Now imagine the exact opposite.
The restaurant at The Setai Tel Aviv Restaurant has turned what should be a refined dining experience into a loud, chaotic spectacle clearly designed for social media, not for diners.
A DJ blasts bass-heavy music at nightclub volume in a space where people are seated, eating, and trying to talk. There is no dancing. There is no reason for music loud enough to physically vibrate your body. At times, it was impossible to hear my wife sitting across the table from me.
The atmosphere felt less like a restaurant and more like a content studio. Influencers hovered, filmed, posed, and demanded attention, while paying guests were treated as an inconvenience.
The staff appeared far more focused on accommodating performative behavior than on providing thoughtful, attentive service.
Japanese cuisine is about restraint, balance, and intention.
This restaurant delivers noise, distraction, and sensory overload. Whatever talent exists in the kitchen is completely undermined by an experience that feels aggressive rather than welcoming.
We had dinner yesterday at the Sushi Bar in the Setai, and the experience started out wonderfully. The atmosphere was vibrant, with great music and a live DJ, and the rooftop location overlooking the beach was truly perfect. The food itself was fresh and well-prepared, and overall we were enjoying the evening.
Unfortunately, the end of our visit left us very disappointed. While we were in the middle of eating our dessert, a staff member abruptly informed us that we had exceeded the 1.5-hour time limit for our table. We were shocked by the approach and felt unwelcome, which completely spoiled the experience. In fact, we left the restaurant without even finishing our cake.
It’s a shame, because the place has so much potential, but the way this policy was enforced really overshadowed the otherwise great setting and food.
For the price, you would expect an elegant experience. They tried. The food was good, the setting is nice, the prices are high, and the music is ridiculously loud. We asked three times for the music to be turned down. each time they did for a short bit, and then would crank it up again louder and louder. We wanted to have a dinner where we could talk to our friends. This is not that place. Disappointed.
I asked to talk to the manager, he was on the phone and completely ignored a high paying customer right in front of him. Never came over to talk to us after I specifically asked to speak with him.
Avoid, avoid, avoid. Unless you want your hearing to be permanently damaged and you enjoy having to yell across the , while paying top dollar (about 170 NiS per entree).
Rude and bad service, changed the conditions of our stay after booking to check in at 20:30 in the evening!?! And dare to take 2k shekels per night on that? Embarrassing. I cancelled my reservation and won't be staying here anytime soon. Can get a way better offer for this amount in the city.
