No Japan trip feels complete without finally trying Ichiran, and I totally get the hype now. We went later at night and there was still a bit of a line, but it moved pretty quickly so we decided it was the perfect time to give it a try.
What makes it special isn’t just the ramen—it’s the whole experience. Sitting in the individual little cubicles felt so unique and oddly calming, like you can fully focus on your food without any distractions. It almost turns the meal into a personal ritual.
I loved how customizable everything is. You get to choose every detail—from the richness of the broth to the strength of the seasoning and the firmness of the noodles—so it feels completely tailored to your taste.
And the ramen itself… so good. Rich, comforting, and exactly what you want, especially late at night. I enjoyed it so much that we even grabbed some of the pre-packaged versions to take home. Still thinking about that bowl.
Definitely a must-try experience 🍜
ICHIRAN Kyoto Kawaramachi absolutely blew us away—this was our first time experiencing it, and it exceeded every expectation we had.
From the start, the process is smooth and well thought out. The ordering system is simple but highly customizable, letting you tailor every aspect of your ramen—from broth richness and garlic intensity to noodle firmness and spice level. It’s not just ordering food—it’s crafting your perfect bowl.
The dining setup is part of what makes this place so unique. The individual booths create a focused, distraction-free environment that lets you fully immerse yourself in the experience. It might feel different at first, but it quickly becomes one of the best parts—you’re locked in on the food, and nothing else matters.
Now, the ramen itself—easily some of the best we’ve ever had. The tonkotsu broth is incredibly rich and flavorful, perfectly balanced without being too heavy. The noodles are cooked exactly to your preference, and every bite is consistent and satisfying. Everything just comes together flawlessly.
One of the standout features is the refill system (kaedama). Being able to order extra noodles mid-meal without missing a beat is a game changer. It keeps the experience going and ensures you leave completely satisfied. It’s those little details that really elevate ICHIRAN above the rest.
Service is quick, efficient, and precise. Even with how popular it is, everything moves smoothly, and you’re never left waiting long.
Overall, everything about this experience was just great—from the unique setup and customization to the top-tier ramen and seamless service. For a first-time visit, it didn’t just meet expectations—it completely shattered them.
Hands down a must-visit in Kyoto. 🍜🔥
We had Japanese ramen for breakfast with our family at Ichiran - Kyoto Kawaramachi. The ramen was absolutely delicious, the restaurant was clean, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We really enjoyed our meal and had a wonderful experience. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Kyoto!
The long queues at Ichiran in several cities have always deterred us, yet we were still keen to discover the hype surrounding this famed ramen spot.
We finally got our chance to dine at Ichiran Kyoto Kawaramachi when we decided on having an early dinner.
Diners are seated at partitioned solo booths and the food is served through bamboo screens. It's a great concept for those that may find solo dining a bit intimidating, as well as those that want to focus solely on their food.
Prior to being seated, diners are provided with an order sheet to further customize their meal (e.g. firmness of noodles, level of dashi etc.). The tonkotsu broth was rich and comforting, and the soft boiled egg with its perfectly runny yolk was the ultimate addition to an already incredible bowl of ramen.
Interestingly, diners can also communicate with the staff using different tiles (e.g. requesting children's bowl and utensils etc.) which hangs to one side of the booth.
I am now an Ichiran-convert and will definitely include this spot in all future travels to Japan!
Delicious ramen with a rich, flavorful broth. I like being able to customize everything, including noodle thickness, firmness, spice level, and toppings, to create my perfect bowl. The staff were friendly, and the setup was interesting—you sit at a small individual counter and receive your meal through a curtain-covered window from the chef.🍜😊
