A short food history of New York City
New York's food history is a history of arrivals. Its 19th-century harbor was famous for oysters, and the tenements of the Lower East Side filled with Jewish delis, Italian bakeries and German beer halls.
Later waves built Chinatown, Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, Flushing's food halls and Jackson Heights' South Asian and Latin American streets. The deli, the pizzeria and the bagel shop became the city's own institutions.
