A Michelin-starred sushi restaurant with a location in Shibuya, specializing in traditional Edomae sushi and omakase courses.
Running chef
The restaurant is run by a skilled chef, with one customer review specifically mentioning an attentive 'lady chef' who provided explanations in English.
Sushi Matsumoto is a Michelin-starred sushi restaurant renowned for its traditional Edomae sushi and omakase courses. Originating in Akasaka, it has established a new location in Shibuya, offering high-quality, fresh fish and an engaging dining experience with attentive chefs.
Customer feedback is largely positive, praising the fresh and flavorful fish, particularly uni and nigiri, and the friendly, communicative staff, including a 'lady chef' who explains dishes in English. Many describe the omakase as an amazing experience. However, some customers feel the price point (¥11,000 - ¥16,000 for omakase) does not always align with the perceived quality of ingredients or the ambiance, which some found too brightly lit for a premium setting. A lunch nigiri set at ¥5,000 is also available.

The most delicious nigiri I've ever eaten! All the fish is fresh! And of a very, very high standard! The side dishes were amazing! The miso soup was perfect and so was the dessert at the end! And most importantly, the chef was lovely! He explained patiently, was funny and kind! A perfect place in every way! Highly recommend!
Boy do I have a lot to say about this place. I first visited a year ago and had a great experience that time around, but this time was much, much different.
First, our dinner reservations were for 8:45pm. We arrived right around that time and they decided to seat us at the end of the bar where they had to remove and clean dirty dishes from the countertop right in front of us.
Upon booking, we listed one person in our party as having shellfish and dairy allergies and we even reminded them before receiving any food, yet when it came time for our first dishes, the waiter had to remind the older chef right in front of us of the shellfish AND dairy allergies as he had started preparing both shellfish and dairy dishes. Upon hearing the waiter, he scoffed, made a huge vocal deal about it, then glared at the person in our party with the allergies. Talk about rudeness and unprofessionalism in a nice omakase experience.
But that's not even the worst part. The worst part was that our main sushi chef was absolutely, utterly sick and kept coughing his lungs out THE ENTIRE MEAL on both the sushi and the table. He did not wear a mask, he did not cough into his sleeve, and he would find excuses to go back to the kitchen and then we'd hear him having major coughing fits tucked away in the back kitchen. It completely turned us off of our EXPENSIVE OMAKASE EXPERIENCE and we left just wondering if we were going to get sick. I'm not sure if this is a Japanese cultural difference where they expect their employees to work through sickness or what but this was absolutely not the setting to allow this.
Lastly, the fish was just okay on average. There were some decent ones but overall a very average sushi experience and definitely not worth the insane amount of money we spent at this restaurant for both the food and the experience.
I would avoid this place at all costs.
I don't ever post but I read a lot of the reviews below and a lot of them are haters so felt like I had to balance them out.
TL; DR: amazing experience.
The lady chef was attentive and kept asking if the wasabi levels were okay; it makes a huge difference when she tried her best in English to explain the menu and we were able to communicate well enough.
Fish was fresh and flavourful especially the uni. Would come again. Every bite was interesting and tasty.
We were a group of 12 and it was not easy to find a sushi omakase restaurant that could fit us and could book in advance. Saw Sushi Matsumoto on Tabelog and booked with a booking fee. We could all fit in the bar area which was really good. Sushi was good, I’m sure there are better places but we were happy with the seating arrangement and the price.
Terrible, I would advise that you avoid at all cost. there are better options elsewhere at a fraction of the price. The quality of the seafood was lacking and the preparation was shockingly unhygienic. For such an established outlet, they had a female chef who doubled as a waitress? She was waiting on tables and receiving guests while preparing our food, touching utensils and menus etc. she also left our cut produce on her chopping board for a good 15 minutes as she went to do her waitressing. Truly Shocking and extremely unhygienic at the same time. Please go elsewhere.
