Additional Details
The gaol dates back to 1845 and closed as a working prison in 1996. It features a tunnel connecting to a former courthouse and has hosted various events, including weddings.
Weekends and holidays may be busier. Weekdays, especially during off-peak hours or on rainy days, can offer a less crowded experience. Booking guided tours is recommended for a more in-depth understanding.
A good place to visit, viewing everything it took us 3-hours to get round - start to finish. However, you could easily do this in 30-minutes, if you just went straight through and didn’t view every room and video clip.
The museum goes through the whole life of the gaol, from day one to present day. If you enjoy this sort of thing you’ll definitely have a good visit and this is for you. I well recommend.
Really great tour of the Prison, we paid extra for a guided tour and really pleased we did. I learnt so much more than wandering around without the guide. He was well informed and had some amazing stories. He had genuine care for everyone on the tour, offering a seat to an older gentleman and took me through a different route when I said I was claustrophobic and couldn't go into the small cell with so many people.
Pleasantly surprised! Did the self guided tour, there wasn’t many other people there on a rainy Wednesday. It was very informative and gave haunted house vibes at times, a very immersive experience. Took around 1 1/2 hours to walk through and listen to the informative videos. Very friendly staff.
Even though it was quite pricey, we ended up here because it was freezing and pouring outside. The videos and holograms were amazing, but sadly, not all the areas were open to visitors. There was no clear parking sign, and parking in front was not allowed. The building was so cold that we spent ninety minutes there, even though the coffee shop was closed for a special event, so even could not get a hot coffee to warm up. The tour ended at a real place of executions, which was a fantastic way to wrap things up.
Great museum outside of the city centre. This is about 30 minutes walk from the city center. Prices were reasonable.
We walked here on a rainy day which helped to set the scene. The conditions for prisoners here were not good. Executions were held here up until 1961. There is the chance to see the room with a noose which saw prisoners off.
There is also a spooky tunnel which connects the abandoned courthouse across the road with the gaol. The tunnel door is locked at the far end. Definitely recommend this place.
