Key Information
The Kings Head is an 800-year-old historic pub located in the heart of Galway, steeped in history dating back to the 13th century. It offers a vibrant atmosphere across three floors, featuring live music, a wide selection of Irish whiskeys, craft beers, cocktails, and a menu of bar food and bistro dishes.
Customers generally praise The Kings Head for its delicious food, particularly the seafood and traditional Irish dishes, and its lively atmosphere with live music. Service is frequently described as friendly, attentive, and efficient, even when busy. The historic ambiance is a significant draw. While most experiences are positive, some minor issues like saltiness in a dish or perceived seating issues have been noted, but overall, it's highly recommended for a great meal and pub experience in Galway.
Additional Details
The building itself dates back to the 13th century and has a rich history, including being confiscated after Galway fell in 1652 during the Cromwellian land settlement.
The Kings Head can be quite busy, especially during peak meal times and evenings due to its popularity and live music. If no reservation is made, guests may be given a buzzer to wait in the bar area. Visiting during off-peak hours might offer a more relaxed experience, but the lively atmosphere is part of its charm.

Great service - which I found it is genuinely true across all restaurants in Ireland, while they are busy they are attentive and fast. The house salad was an absolute good surprise - it is a bawl of radish and its leaves, onion, beets, rosemary, very tasty. The seafood chowder was delicious except a bit too salty. My first time try brown bread and butter - not sure if it is this place or me, it was not as good as I imaged. But in general had a great lunch.
Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were told there would be a 30-minute wait, but we were seated within 10 minutes, which was great. We then requested a table closer to the band and were told we could sit at a nearby table for four. However, less than five minutes later, another couple was seated there instead. Naturally, it made me wonder if the color of my skin played a role.
Sometimes it’s the small things that can make or break a restaurant experience. This was our first restaurant here, and I’m sure there are better places with friendlier service. Being handed vegetable stew in a to-go box to eat felt inconsiderate and unwelcoming. I’m from Texas — we simply don’t treat people like that. See pic below
We had oysters, which were delicious of course being an American from Texas. We are so used to our crackers, and apparently they don’t know what that is. She had no idea what I was talking about.
However, I should be grateful that they had Tabasco sauce.
A really great establishment. Very good food and drink. We had the fish chowder, crab claws, oysters and fish and chips. All were exceptional. Also enjoyed a rhubarb crumble desert. Fast friendly service too. I highly recommend.
Definitely 5/5
Food was good and tasty. Very little waiting time even though they are packed.
World class service by the crew.
Ambience was credible.
Only thing is I probably won’t order the Lobster & Chips. Seems kinda small for €50 but that’s my personal thoughts.
If there is no reservation, you probably have to wait. But they will give you a buzzer while you wait in the bar beside with your drinks.
Highly recommend this pub!! The Guinness beef stew was delicious as was my husband's steak and the brown bread (we asked for seconds). The clams which were appetizers were some of the best we have had. Their sauce was delicious for dipping our bread in. Our drinks were very, very good as well. The multiple ladies that came to our table for drinks, food, silverware etc. were incredible, cheerful and just all out lovely. If 10 stars were available I would give them 10. One of the best meals we had in Ireland.
