Wahpepah'S Kitchen

Coming here for a casual lunch was a great opportunity to experience the flavors of native American foods. Located in the Fruitvale area right next to the BART station, you will need to be mindful of where you park. Since we were here on a Sunday afternoon we were able to utilize the BART lot for free. The interior is bright, simple and open space with several tables. We chose to dine outside under the giant tree covered patio. It's a nice relaxing space, and the owners do a good job of keeping the panhandlers from bothering the diners. The girls running the store on this Sunday were super sweet, attentive and helpful throughout our stay. The four of us shared several dishes and all were really quite good. Everything was very fresh and well prepared. Know before you go... Wahpepah's Kitchen specializes in true native American cuisine. The food is simply prepared, fresh and local which means the menu may change depending upon what is available locally as the seasons change. I love that aspect, and their commitment to sourcing fresh local products. Of all the items we ordered, I personally loved the bison frybread and bison tacos (meat eater here), the mole and the Three Sisters veggie bowl were also great.

Service was great, food was tasty and very good. There was enough seating even tho they were a bit busy. I ordered the bison tacos and sorry ate them so fast forgot to take a picture. But I will be back to enjoy another tasty bite here. Ingredients were on point and the taco shell was made fresh. Couldn't pass on it since we are in Oakland. If you can't find this lil spot it's right across from the bart entrance

After seeing Wahpepah's on "Check, Please! Bay Area" we just had to try it out! I thought that the Sweet Potato Hibiscus Taquitos were a delicious appetizer. I followed that with the Bison Warrior Wrap, lots of meat and a delicious combination of greens inside the tastiest wrap! I wonder if the lean Bison meat could be cooked a little less (medium rare?) to bring out more flavor? Dessert for me was the Corn Mush, WOW! This could also be a good starter for the day as well as dessert?!! Of course do not miss the Frybread!

Amazing indigenous restaurant. Such a special place, in all of the United States there are so few indigenous restaurants and opportunities for people to have this experience. Indigenous people cultivate a majority of the world’s foods that are used today. So wonderful to be able to go back to one of the sources we had a great meal and experience in the wonderful restaurant. The owner even came and checked on us and was warm and kind.
