At age 29, after a battle with cancer
For short-form personal narrative
Chef Fatima Ali was a Pakistani-American chef, a beloved contestant and Fan Favorite of Top Chef Season 15. She was posthumously awarded a prestigious James Beard Foundation Journalism Award, recognizing her powerful narrative and culinary talent.
Fatima Ali was universally admired for her vibrant personality, culinary skills, and inspiring resilience in the face of illness. Her 'Fan Favorite' title on Top Chef and the outpouring of grief and respect following her passing attest to her profound positive impact on fans and peers.
Fatima Ali battled Ewing's sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, and passed away at the age of 29 on January 25, 2019. In her honor, the 'Chef Fatima Spirit Award' was established to celebrate kindness and courage in the culinary world. Note: There is also a 'Chef Fatma' who runs a traditional home-style restaurant in Le Kef, Tunisia, which is distinct from Fatima Ali.
