Key Information
COAST Big Sur Cafe, also known as Cafe Kevah, was renowned for its spectacular cliffside location offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. It was part of a larger complex that included a boutique and an art gallery, providing a unique stop along Highway 1. The cafe offered a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere with ample outdoor seating.
Customers consistently praised the cafe for its unparalleled ocean views, which many felt justified the higher prices. The staff were frequently described as friendly, patient, and attentive, contributing to a warm and relaxed experience. Specific food items like the breakfast burrito and fresh pastries received positive remarks for their quality. The espresso coffee was also noted as solid. Common themes included the desire to return and the cafe being a memorable, family-friendly stop.
Additional Details
COAST Big Sur Cafe ceased operations around July 2024, as the wider property it shared with other structures was being sold. It was considered an 'underrated restaurant gem' and was known for its 'world-class baking'. The cafe component was often referred to as Cafe Kevah, sharing the same iconic address and cliffside setting.
While currently closed, when operational, it was advisable to visit early due to limited parking, especially during peak times, to secure a spot and enjoy the views.

Cafe Kevah in Big Sur has an amazing and breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding area. We stopped in to have small plates to eat to tie us over until late lunch back in San Francisco. Cafe is situated on a cliff overlooking the ocean in every direction. It has plenty of outdoor seating, first come, first serve, and a great spot to have an outdoor meal while taking in the beautiful and peaceful scenery. Loved seeing the blue jays flying over us. Our food was overpriced but surprisingly well prepared and the view made up for it. After our lovely snacks, we went to the Phoenix gift shop on the lower level and picked up some small gift items. We even went to the top level to check out Nepenthe but the premium pricing discouraged us to dine there. We will definitely visit Cafe Kevin next time we are in Big Sur area.
Cafe Kevah was a fantastic stop, especially traveling with a two-year-old.
Despite being a self-order setup, the service was genuinely warm and attentive. Staff were patient, friendly, and made the experience feel relaxed rather than transactional.
Food was better than expected for a scenic brunch spot. I had the breakfast burrito, which was hearty and well done, along with a pastry that was fresh and satisfying. Espresso coffee was solid too, which is always appreciated in a remote location.
And of course, the view is spectacular. Sitting out there with coffee, good food, and a calm toddler felt like a real moment rather than a rushed pit stop.
One of the rare Highway 1 stops that manages to be scenic, family-friendly, and actually delivers on food quality. Would absolutely return.
There is no other place in Big Sur with this spectacular a view offering a delicious brunch/lunch/wine/espresso drinks to enjoy and savor while the view of the ocean and coast line is right in front of you. Parking is limited so come early.
Favorite place to stop & eat along the Big Sur highway. Amazing views, friendly staff, and great food. Of course it is a bit pricey, but you’re paying for the views & most places along the highway are pricey. The food is great quality. The breakfast burrito is the best one I’ve ever had. A great portion served with sour cream, salsa, and fresh fruit. The iced coffee is perfect & is bottomless (plus they’ll give you a to-go cup when you’re getting ready to leave for more iced coffee!). Great music always on the patio too. Love it at Cafe Kevah!!!!
After touring Big Surf all morning this is a great stop to have a late breakfast and coffee. The parking lot wasn’t busy in late October and we grabbed a nice table with umbrellas and a beautiful view.
The food as good, not great and bit pricey as expected. The staff seem very friendly and fast. Almost a must stop for chilling and the view.
