Ichiran is the perfect single eater ramen experience! My husband loves the Ichiran in NYC so we had to come to the mother ship to experience it here. This location was decently busy when we got here around 7:15 pm on a Sunday night. It got busier when we left with the line extending to the road. I think we waited around 20-25 mins for our turn.
So for those who don't know (like me), you wait in line until you get to the vending machine where you choose your basic food option (ramen, pudding, etc). Once you get the ticket, you get in a different line where they give you a page to customize your ramen (rich, spicy, noodle thickness, how much green onion, etc etc). Then, once a booth opens up, you sit and offer your ticket and paper to the service person through the open window. You don't see their face. They don't see yours. They will tell you what they are doing, but you are not expected to reply. There are cue cards for most things in your booth (menu for extra items you'd like, simple comment signs, guest comment cards if you want to say something more prose). They provide you with water. They have instructions on how to peel the egg if you order the extra half boiled egg. This is real introvert heaven and I haven't enjoyed a bowl of ramen more!!
This particular location is slightly more tourist friendly. They don't speak English but they have English cue cards and do seat your party together. My husband said that his experience in NYC was that people could take any empty booth. If you tell them that you don't care about being seated together, they will seat you first come first serve as long as the larger parties ahead of you are ok with it. The seating chart is displayed outside so you can see the open and taken booths as you wait in line.
My husband and I ordered the ramen with strong dashi, rich, with green onions, pork, 1 garlic, glove, firm noodles and spice levels of 8 and 10 respectively. I also got the matcha almond pudding which we shared. He got the extra egg.
The ramen was fantastic! Level 10 spice is free. Anything above that is charged extra. Level 10 was perfect for me (I am Indian and I love spicy food). The bowl was a big portion, but I came very close to finishing it. The noodles were perfectly firm. The chashu was cooked just right.
The matcha almond pudding was small enough to be an accompaniment to the large ramen bowl and large enough that you appreciated the taste. It was smooth, sweet but grounded with the powdered matcha taste. I would have liked more matcha but my husband said it was enough for him.
All in all, it was a great experience that I recommend to everyone!
