Chiba Takaoka was a quiet, exclusive experience—almost like dining in someone’s private kitchen. There were only two tables that night, just four of us in total, which made the whole evening feel incredibly personal.
Most of the ingredients are caught and shipped fresh from Chiba, and you can really taste that in every dish. The chef was super friendly, chatting with us about his background and how he approaches the cuisine. It felt more like a conversation, which I really appreciated.
The meal started with some kelp with ponzu sauce, then octopus, and homemade marinated bonito sashimi. The monkfish liver that had a tofu-like texture was unique and set the tone beautifully. Then came the chawanmushi made with steamed clam essence, which completely blew us away.
Every dish featured the natural flavours of the ingredients—whether it was the clean saltiness of the sea or the deep umami of the fish and seafood.
The toro sushis were rich, and the clams from the soup earlier were used again in nigiri, which was a nice touch. Everything was top-notch.
I’d definitely come back. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down and really savour the moment. Perfect for date nights.

Had an amazing meal here. Highlight of our trip. It ended up only being 3 of us for dinner, so it was very intimate. Chefs didn't know much English but the server helped translate. The two chefs were very friendly and were excited to hear we were from California. They were big fans and even talked about using uni from sb. Tip, the door wasn't open when we showed up. When it was time we had to let ourselves in..

The flavour is typical Japanese where its very light and delicate so if you're used to stronger hard-hitting flavours then you'd be disappointed. The whole experience is like watching a theatre/performance and the decor as well as the plates and interior is well thought out. The chef is very accommodating especially to foreigners, explaining each dish as best he could with a little English. The sake is also very reasonably priced and complimented the food.
