⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A truly exceptional solo dining experience at Tom Brown
I had dinner at Tom Brown last night, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment I walked in, the hospitality stood out. The manager and my server, Dennis, were genuinely attentive in a way that felt effortless rather than performative. As a solo diner, I often brace myself for a bit of awkwardness, but they immediately put me at ease — they even offered me a book to keep me company, which was such a thoughtful touch. I never once felt out of place or lonely.
The food itself was spectacular. Tom Brown, the chef, personally served a few of the dishes — something you rarely see in a Michelin‑starred restaurant — and it speaks volumes about how much he cares about his guests and his craft. The crab custard and the beetroot cod were absolute standouts for me, beautifully balanced and memorable.
Dining alone also gave me the chance to observe the team in action, and it was impressive. I watched the manager coaching staff on service technique, saw how quickly and quietly water glasses were topped up, and noticed the smooth coordination that makes the whole experience feel seamless.
Honestly, I have nothing negative to say about my evening at Tom Brown. Exceptional food, genuine hospitality, and a team that clearly takes pride in what they do. I highly recommend it — whether you’re dining solo or not.
Absolutely loved dining here! Every dish is a masterpiece. The menu is seafood-focused (to my greatest joy) but they also have meat and chicken dishes, and even Halal options, which is such a nice touch for a high-end restaurant like this.
The staff is wonderful and genuinely lovely
You can get a peek into the kitchen through their little open kitchen area which is pretty cool ! Overall, an incredible dining experience, highly recommend!
Amazing food, beautifully presented showcasing Tom Brown's clean, creative, and produce-driven cooking. From the entrance greeting and throughout our meal, the service was friendly and impeccable. We choose the 3 course lunch menu where there are 2 choices from each course and since there were 2 of us we got to see all the dishes!
The quality of the ingredients and precise detail of the presentation elevated our meal.
Our first courses were Bream, soy and a quails egg and Mackerel, hazelnut, rhubarb. Both delicious with bold flavours.
For mains we had Cod, asparagus with a roast chicken jus and Plaice, smoked eel with Chard - both winners and innovative combing the cod with roast chicken jus.
Finishing with Alphonse mango, pistachio, lime with a scallop shaped Tuiles was perfect as was the Chocolate, Olive Oil, Caper, a creamy decadent smooth chocolate desert.
I enjoyed all the dishes and loved how the different pairings of ingredients worked so well together.
From the moment we arrived, the ambience at Tom Brown at The Capital set the tone for an unforgettable lunch. The restaurant strikes the perfect balance between elegant and relaxed, making it ideal for both a special occasion or a refined everyday treat.
The service was impeccable. warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly without ever feeling intrusive. Our server made excellent recommendations and took time to ensure every aspect of our meal was perfect.
The food itself was outstanding. The bread and butter was simple but elevated, setting a deliciously refined stage for the courses to follow. The crab custard was a revelation, rich, silky, and full of delicate, nuanced flavour. The hake was cooked to perfection, tender and flaky, accompanied by a beautifully balanced sauce that complemented the fish without overpowering it.
Every element of the meal demonstrated the kitchen’s skill and attention to detail, making each bite a pleasure. Combined with the excellent service and the sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere, this lunch was truly memorable.
I cannot recommend Tom Brown at The Capital highly enough, a perfect harmony of ambience, service, and extraordinary food. We will certainly be returning.
Tom Brown at the Capital
We enjoyed visiting Cornerstone regularly for the six years it was open until the sad closing in 2024. The food was amazing , the service was excellent and we built up a great relationship with all of the team. But upon hearing that Tom was opening a restaurant at the Capital Hotel a place where he worked under Nathan Outlaw we were very excited to go.
So after three months of opening we finally payed our first visit to Tom Brown at the Capital. What I can say is that this is Cornerstone taken to the next level. The food was stunning , the service was first class and this all happened in a beautiful and stylish dining room.
Our afternoon got off to a fabulous start as we entered the hotel to be greeted by restaurant manager Charlie who then escorted us into the bar area for an aperitif. While enjoying a cocktail we looked at he menus where you could choose from either the Three course A la Carte or the Five and Seven course Tasting Menu.
We then made our way to the dining room to be seated to our table. While chatting with Charlie we were offered the chance to experience the Nine course evening tasting menu which we gladly accepted. Next was to choose a bottle of wine to pair with the food and opted for the 2022 Finca Montepedroso Verdejo that was a dry wine with citrus notes that complimented each dish perfectly.
The menu began with delight as we loved the Lobster Toast with Lardo. This was followed by the Oyster with cider and gooseberry. Next was the Charcuterie along with bread , butter and a crab oil.
Our palate was the refreshed with a fabulous Scallop with melon and caviar before we enjoyed the Mackerel Tartare with soy and quail egg. The menu was improving with every dish and the Crab Custard with tomato and horseradish was no exception. Now it was time for the amazing Cuttlefish ‘cacio e pepe’ which led us to the main course of Monkfish , courgette and the famous chicken butter sauce.
Before moving to the dessert we decided to have the supplemented cheese course of Baron Bigod , canele and truffle honey that was incredible. This led to the dessert of English Strawberry , cheesecake and sorrel just a delightful way to end a fantastic tasting menu.
We finished with coffee and petit fours while enjoying a nice chat with Charlie. This gave us the opportunity to thank him and the team for a fabulous afternoon and one we will definitely be making a return to again soon. This is an upmarket version of Cornerstone that we absolutely loved. The food is of a higher level the service is friendly and professional and the location is amazing. So yes I would highly recommend a visit.
Thank You Tom and all your team for a fantastic afternoon and look forward to seeing you all again soon.
